Helping a teenager get organised without doing it for them

2026-07-02 · 6 min read

Deadlines, planners and the handover of responsibility between grades 6 and 9, and what to do when it slips.

Middle school is where homework stops being a single sheet due tomorrow and becomes several pieces due across a week. Most students need to be taught how to handle that, explicitly.

We teach a planner routine in the first weeks of grade 6: write the deadline down, break the task into steps, and put the steps on days. Parents can see the same deadlines in the portal.

The aim across grades 6 to 9 is a handover. In grade 6 you check the planner with them; by grade 9 you ask once a week and let them answer.

When it slips, and it does, go back a step rather than taking over. Taking over feels efficient and teaches nothing.

Tell us early. A teacher who knows a student is struggling with organisation rather than content will set the work differently.

Look through the grades, or talk to admissions about your child. A call takes twenty minutes, costs nothing, and we will tell you honestly if we are not the right school for them.
